Spelling humorously noted her readiness to face the crowded malls alone, embracing her new role as a single mother during Christmas 2023. She and McDermott, who are parents to Liam, 16, Finn, 10, Beau, 6, Stella, 15, and Hattie, 11, are navigating this holiday season separately for the first time since their split earlier in the year. McDermott, 57, is also the father of Jack, 25, from a previous marriage.
The couple’s separation was publicly announced by McDermott in June through a now-deleted Instagram post, marking the end of their 17-year marriage. Following this, McDermott candidly discussed his challenges with alcohol in an interview with the Daily Mail. He shared his regrets about a particular altercation with Spelling and their children, which he described as a pivotal moment in their relationship.
Spelling was reportedly taken aback by the detailed public disclosure of their family’s private matters. Sources close to her expressed concern about the children’s well-being, given McDermott’s history of outbursts and rage. As of June, McDermott had not been in physical contact with their children, maintaining communication only through phone calls.
The uncertainty surrounding the family’s Christmas plans was highlighted by another source, who emphasized the dependence of these plans on McDermott’s progress in sobriety and healing. McDermott, who had recently completed a 40-day inpatient treatment, was residing in a sober living facility for men at the time.
In the meantime, both Spelling and McDermott have been moving forward with their personal lives. McDermott has been linked with Lily Calo since October, while Spelling began a relationship with Ryan Cramer in November.
