Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Discuss Financial Losses and Triumphs with Wrexham Football Club

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC, openly discussed the financial losses they’ve incurred with the club. During a recent episode of “Welcome to Wrexham,” McElhenney humorously brought up the topic of their financial setbacks. Reynolds echoed his co-chairman’s sentiments, seeking clarity on the losses.

Humphrey Ker, the executive director of Wrexham AFC, initially avoided specifying the amount, stating it was “loads” of money. Shaun Harvey, an advisor to the Wrexham Board, later estimated the losses to be over £10 million (more than $12 million). Reynolds humorously reacted to the figure, saying he felt like throwing up. However, Harvey reassured them that the club’s current value would be “far more” than £10 million if they decided to sell it. He also mentioned that the club’s promotion to a higher league would be financially beneficial.

The episode also featured Wrexham’s match against their arch-rival, Notts County. The game was intense, but Wrexham emerged victorious with a 3-2 win. McElhenney and Reynolds were ecstatic, with McElhenney praising goaltender Ben Foster for a game-saving penalty kick block. Both co-chairmen agreed it was the “greatest moment” of their lives, aside from family milestones, as Reynolds jokingly noted.

In addition to their on-field success, Reynolds and McElhenney were honored with the Freedom of the Borough Award from the Wrexham council. McElhenney, known for his role in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” described the recognition as an “incredible honor” and spoke about the unifying power of football.

New episodes of “Welcome to Wrexham” are set to air on Tuesdays on FX, offering more insights into the club’s journey under its celebrity co-chairmen.
