The 17th Annual All-Star Gospel Celebration (ASGC), held during the NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana, served as a beacon of inspiration and community spirit, embodying the essence of the #Selfmade and Harlem Renaissance themes. The historic Madam CJ Walker Legacy Center, named after the first self-made female millionaire in the United States, provided a fitting backdrop for this event that celebrated past achievements and contemporary contributions to the African American community.
The ASGC, executive produced by Tomeka B Holyfield, has become a hallmark event that bridges the gap between sports, entertainment, and faith, drawing in celebrities, award-winning artists, and community leaders alike. This year’s celebration was no exception, with a guest list that included NBA champions, award-winning recording artists, and local heroes who have significantly impacted their communities.
The All-Star Gospel Celebration is the official kick-off gospel event during NBA All-Star Week. Hosted by NBA veteran Maurice “Mo” Evans and three-time NBA All-Star host Jacinda Jacobs, the event paid special tribute to individuals like Andre Iguodala and his mother, Linda Shanklin, as well as Indiana Pacers forward-center Oscar Tshiebwe, real estate mogul Tomi Rose, and the dynamic duo of actor and comedian Mike Epps and Image Award-winning TV producer Kyra Epps. These honorees were celebrated for their resilience, dedication, and contributions to their communities, embodying the spirit of self-made success and community service.
The Epps couple, in particular, stood out for their commitment to revitalizing the neighborhood where Mike grew up. By purchasing and renovating homes, they are investing in real estate and the community’s future, ensuring the revival of the area’s charm and character. Mike Epps’ acceptance speech emphasized the importance of staying humble and allowing room for personal growth and spiritual development, a message that resonated deeply with the audience.
The event also honored the legacy of Madam CJ Walker, celebrating her monumental achievements and the indelible mark she left on the African-American community. By hosting the ASGC at the Madam CJ Walker Legacy Center, organizers aimed to connect the dots between the past and the present, showcasing the ongoing journey of African American success and empowerment.
Musical performances by Grammy® award-winning artist Dante Bowe, Dove-nominated Kelontae Gavin, Billboard Music Award artist Koryn Hawthorne, and Stellar Award-winning gospel saxophonist Angella Christie added a vibrant layer of entertainment to the event. Their performances, infused with soulful melodies and uplifting messages, captured the Harlem Renaissance’s spirit, celebrating the African American community’s rich cultural heritage and artistic achievements.
An innovative addition to this year’s celebration was the recognition of ABA players, honoring the contributions of athletes who played between 1967 and 1976. This gesture acknowledged the historical significance of the ABA and highlighted the event’s commitment to celebrating all facets of African American achievement in sports.
Holyfield’s intention to showcase local talent and foster community pride was evident throughout the event. By including local figures like Olivia West as the red carpet correspondent, alongside the talented Dru Evans, who has been the red carpet host for the event, the ASGC highlighted Indianapolis residents’ diverse talents and contributions, further cementing the event’s role in promoting community unity and pride.
Proceeds from the ASGC went towards supporting domestic violence victims, underprivileged children, breast cancer awareness, and the fight against sickle-cell disease through the “BE THE MATCH” movement, showcasing the event’s commitment to celebrating achievements and giving back to the community.
The 17th Annual All-Star Gospel Celebration was more than just an event; it was a testament to the power of faith, community, and resilience. By honoring the past, celebrating the present, and looking forward to the future, the ASGC underscored the importance of remembering our roots while striving for greatness, embodying the true spirit of the #Selfmade and Harlem Renaissance themes.
