Robert Pattinson Admits He Approaches Each New Role Feeling Like an “Amateur” and a “Total Fake”

Robert Pattinson, recognized globally for his role in “Twilight,” recently shared his approach to acting in an interview with Barry Keoghan for Wonderland magazine. At 37, Pattinson embraces a sense of amateurism for each new role, stating, “I can’t remember how to do any of this stuff,” before embarking on a new project. This mindset, he believes, helps him climb new heights in his career, akin to starting from scratch.

Barry Keoghan, 31, Pattinson’s co-star in “The Batman,” resonated with this view. Keoghan highlighted the risk of familiarity in acting, suggesting it might erode the spontaneity and instinctiveness directors and audiences cherish.

Pattinson elaborated on the advantages of this approach. He believes avoiding repetition of past successes in acting is crucial. He reflected on instances where repeating previously praised elements led to disappointment in subsequent performances, emphasizing the necessity of continual reinvention.

Pattinson’s diverse portfolio includes roles like Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter” and Rev. Preston Teagardin in “The Devil All the Time,” showcasing his adaptability. His journey also includes romantic leads in “Remember Me” and “Water for Elephants.” Despite his varied and acclaimed performances, Pattinson disconnects from his characters post-filming, a shift from his earlier challenges in watching his own work.

Interestingly, Pattinson’s iconic role as Edward Cullen in “Twilight” continues to be a topic of discussion. Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the original “Twilight” film, revealed the studio’s initial doubts about Pattinson’s fit for the role. Hardwicke confidently transformed Pattinson into the beloved vampire character, underlining his distinct features and potential.

Pattinson, expecting his first child with Suki Waterhouse, once expressed uncertainty about playing a vampire. He told W Magazine in 2017 that the unique storyline of “Twilight” might have been perceived as odd if not for its massive success. Reflecting on the “Twilight” series, he found the experience enjoyable and a peculiar chapter in his twenties.
