Nick Lachey’s Unconventional Vocal Trick on 98 Degrees’ ‘I Do (Cherish You)’ Revealed

The Surprising Story Behind 98 Degrees’ Hit Song

In a recent episode of Us Weekly’s “The Anatomy of a Song,” Nick Lachey, one of the prominent members of the ’90s sensation 98 Degrees, shared a fascinating anecdote about the recording of their iconic track, “I Do (Cherish You).” This revelation sheds light on the unique and unexpected vocal technique he employed to overcome a bout of illness during the recording process.

The ’90s witnessed the meteoric rise of boy bands, and 98 Degrees was undeniably one of the standout acts of that era. But as glamorous as it may seem, the journey to producing chart-topping hits was not always straightforward. In this exclusive interview, Nick Lachey, now 49, sits down with his fellow 98 Degrees bandmates, Drew Lachey, Jeff Timmons, and Justin Jeffre, to reminisce about the creation of their timeless songs, with a special focus on the memorable track, “I Do (Cherish You).”

Nick’s Battle with Illness

During the discussion, Nick candidly revealed that he was grappling with a cold at the time of recording “I Do (Cherish You).” Facing a challenging situation, he turned to a rather unconventional solution, thanks to some advice from their record producer, Keith Thomas. The remedy? Enjoying a snack of good old-fashioned Lays potato chips. The rationale behind this peculiar trick was that the oil from the chips would coat his throat, potentially improving his vocal performance. Interestingly, Keith Thomas had previously recommended this technique to Vanessa Williams, and Nick decided to give it a shot. Surprisingly, he continues to use this method to this day.

Jeff Timmons couldn’t resist poking fun at his longtime friend, suggesting that Nick’s voice sounded “syrupy and beautiful” on the song, hinting that the potato chip trick might have indeed worked. He humorously quipped that aspiring singers looking to emulate Nick Lachey’s vocal prowess should consider indulging in Lays potato chips.
