About Kendra Van de Water
Kendra Van de Water is a youth advocate, policy strategist and leader focused on violence reduction, youth empowerment and community-centered approaches to public safety. She is the co-founder and executive director of Youth Empowerment for Advancement Hangout (YEAH), a Philadelphia-based organization working through advocacy and research.
With a background in social work, Van de Water focuses on helping organizations and leaders address youth justice, mental health, violence prevention, and needs. Her work has included engaging with local leaders, nonprofits and government agencies while examining approaches that emphasize accountability, opportunity and support.
Her commitment to advocacy was shaped by experiences and an interest in challenging assumptions about what communities need. Through YEAH, she has pursued initiatives designed to provide information and develop approaches to issues affecting young people and families.
Van de Water’s leadership philosophy emphasizes authenticity, transparency, communication, wellness and accountability. She also speaks about the importance of boundaries and sustainable leadership, connecting growth with personal freedom and quality of life.
Among YEAH’s initiatives is a comic book focused on helping people understand their rights during interactions with police. The project reflects her interest in making civic information more accessible.
Van de Water has received recognition from Philadelphia City Council, Black Wharton and organizations, including the 2019 Social Worker of the Year award, the 2023 City & State Women in Merit Above & Beyond recognition and a 2025 Women of Excellence Award from WDAS-FM.
