In the gritty underbelly of New Jersey’s underground hip-hop scene, a seismic tremor has erupted with the release of “Nature of the Beast,” the latest EP from Dual Diagnosis. This hardcore hip-hop duo, comprised of brothers Mad Mike and Paulie Walnutz, has been carving their niche in the underground music world since the early 2000s, and their latest offering is a testament to their enduring passion and evolving artistry.
Dropped in June 2024, “Nature of the Beast” is a six-track sonic assault that doesn’t pull any punches. The EP runs for a tight 16 minutes and 48 seconds, but in that brief span, Dual Diagnosis manages to drag listeners through a hellscape of raw emotion, unflinching honesty, and hard-hitting beats that’ll leave your speakers smoking.
The project kicks off with an “Intro” that sets the tone for the journey ahead. It’s followed by the title track, “Nature of the Beast,” a banger that showcases Mad Mike‘s razor-sharp lyricism and his knack for crafting hooks that stick in your head like shrapnel. The official music video for this track, released on May 17, 2024, has already racked up over 61,000 views on YouTube, proving that the underground is hungry for Dual Diagnosis‘ brand of unapologetic realness.
As the EP progresses through tracks like “Harsh” and “Patient on the Run,” it becomes clear that Dual Diagnosis isn’t here to sugarcoat anything. Their horror-core style dives deep into themes of loss, grief, pain, and trauma, offering a visceral exploration of mental health struggles that many listeners will find all too relatable. But it’s not all darkness – there’s a glimmer of hope in their music, a testament to the human spirit’s resilience in the face of adversity.
The production of “Nature of the Beast” is nothing short of professional, demonstrating the growth and refinement of Dual Diagnosis‘ sound over the years. Mad Mike himself produced half of the album, including standout tracks like “Nature of the Beast” and “The Edge.” The other half, including “Patient on the Run” and “Murder One,” was handled by The Arcitype, adding another layer of complexity to the EP’s soundscape. The entire project was recorded at Bow Wow Studios in New Jersey and mixed and mastered by CJ Scioscia, resulting in a polished yet raw sound that perfectly complements the intense subject matter.
Released strategically in May during Mental Health Awareness Month, “Nature of the Beast” serves as both a cathartic release for the artists and a lifeline for listeners grappling with their own demons. The fusion of hardcore rap and rock creates a metaphorical narrative structure, with each song acting as a release valve for pent-up emotions while simultaneously offering messages of healing and hope.
Since its release, “Nature of the Beast” has been making waves in the underground scene and beyond. The EP has garnered praise from numerous media outlets, including Stereo Stickman, New Edge Times, USA Wire, Hype Magazine, and Artist Weekly, among others. This widespread recognition is a testament to the universal appeal of Dual Diagnosis‘ honest and hard-hitting approach to music-making.
For those unfamiliar with Dual Diagnosis, this EP serves as a perfect introduction to their world. Influenced by the rap and rock invasion of the ’90s, Mad Mike and Paulie Walnutz have honed their craft over two decades, collaborating with well-known artists like Slaine, Gorilla Voltage, and UnderRated along the way. Their journey from making their first music video, “Mad Man,” in 2018 to releasing this polished EP showcases their growth and dedication to their art.
As the final track, “The Edge,” fades out, listeners are left with a mix of emotions – drained yet invigorated, shaken yet understood. That’s the power of “Nature of the Beast.” It’s more than just an EP – it’s a lifeline thrown out to those still struggling, a voice for those who feel voiceless, and a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we’re not alone.
In a world where mainstream hip-hop often feels sanitized and commercialized, “Nature of the Beast” is a raw, unfiltered look into the human psyche, delivered with the skill and intensity that only veterans of the game can bring. It’s a reminder of why we fell in love with hip-hop in the first place – its power to speak truth, to heal, and to unite us in our shared struggles.
And as long as there are beats to drop and truths to be spoken, you can bet Dual Diagnosis will be there, mic in hand, ready to emerge from the dark and shine a light on the nature of the beast within us all.
