Tara Strong, a well-known voice actress, criticized the latest Super Mario movie for not ceding the role of Mario to her in-game voice actor, Charles Martinet.

In recent years, Hollywood has habitually replaced certain voices fit for projects with big names without experience.

Her criticism stems from Hollywood bringing iconic cartoons and video games to the big screens but overlooking voice actors and actresses with better resumes.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination, Universal Pictures’ animation division.

Announced in 2018, the film features Chris Pratt at the helm of the iconic video game character.

Jack Black joins Pratt as Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

Original Mario voice Charles Martinet is still listed in the Super Mario film, but his role is yet to be revealed.

Tara Strong

Tara Strong has been one of the most iconic voice actresses in animation and video games for over two decades.

Millennials and Gen Zs know her best for lending her voice to The Powerpuff Girls, The Fairly Oddparents, Teen Titans and many other projects.

Strong posted a photo of her on Twitter with Super Mario voice actor Martinet holding an illustration with the caption:

“It should be Charles.”

Although Tara Strong didn’t outright say it, she believes that Charles Martinet should be assigned the role of the character he has played since 1992.

She followed her tweet with another, criticizing Hollywood’s tendency to use big names instead of expert voice actors.

“Voice actors- I’m gonna put up my heart & soul in this for at least 20 years, help sell billions in merch, make the studio millions of dollars, & make generations around the world happy,” she tweeted.

“Hollywood- We don’t care.”

Charles Martinet

A day after venting her frustrations, Strong followed up with a more encouraging tweet, inviting people to share their photos and stories with Martinet.

Moved by the love from fans, the Super Mario voice actor replied:

“I love your Tara! Thank you so much! Thank you everybody!”

“Your love and kindness mean more than you could ever know, and genuinely touched my heart,” Martinet added.

“My little eyes seem to be leaking today… with tender affection. Thank you…”

Tara Strong’s final thoughts

The voice actress gained traction, with many agreeing with her sentiments.

In addition, many were critical of the latest trailer showing Chris Pratt’s performance.

However, others were quick to come to his aid.

One response said people judged the Guardians of the Galaxy actor too harshly for only two lines featured in the trailer.

They made false claims that Martinet was offered the role but declined because the task was too exhausting for him, especially a full-length film.

“Literally not one thing about your tweet is true,” Strong responded.

“No one should be judging Chris, he’s a fantastic actor…this is only about what’s right & Charles should have been offered the role.”
