Having perfected the studio chemistry with her backing band – and with her song telling a potent story about missing someone but learning to live with just their memories – Nashville songwriter Audra Watt is exemplifying just how accomplished she is as a songwriter.
Nashville-based singer-songwriter Audra Watt has shared her newest single, ‘The Good Of It.’
The new single comes as Audra Watt gets set to make her mark on the music world. Following the summer release of her previous single, ‘Bullet Trains’, she generated plenty of industry buzz, much of it due to the honest, upfront nature of her songwriting.
‘The Good Of It’ continues to show just how brilliant she is as a songwriter. The song, which Audra herself called an ‘alt-country’ number, drips with melancholy and wistfulness, with the singer mulling over the relatable experience of not getting to have proper closure with someone she loved: “I wish I had saved/ A picture or two of you and me framed/ When you were still mine to lose.”
Audra’s melodies are commanding, helping to give the lyrics their full power. She navigates tricky waters to make sure that her words don’t sound trite or melodramatic; instead, her fragile vocals invite listeners into her world, allowing us to follow her as she toys over the best way to remember a loved one.
This combination of exquisite songwriting and excellent vocals is arguably what sets Audra apart from other acoustic country artists who are emerging at the moment. Having spent her college years in Nashville – a time which provided the artist with a “rich musical education” – Audra said she took courses in Country and Blues music and songwriting, even recording a small demo. Later, after returning to Nashville in her early 40s, Audra studied at Berklee College of Music, participated in writing workshops led by Grammy-nominated songwriters, and attended master classes.
From this, she eventually earned recognition from Songtown and the Nashville Songwriters Association. With her extensive training, workshopping, performing, writing, and accolade-collecting, Audra began to hone her craft in recent years, trying to discover a sound that worked best for her voice and the themes she wanted to write about. Her music has been called a compelling blend of Americana, country, and alternative pop – but more importantly, it is characterized by emotional depth and a touch of what she calls “intellectual pop.”
All of this goes a long way to explaining why Audra Watt seems to have emerged on the scene as the complete package – she’s already being called an accomplished songwriter, and she has a history of working alongside some of the best in the business. ‘Bullet Trains’ and ‘The Good Of It’ are just the start of things for the artist, as she has several more singles lined up to share with audiences in the coming months.
