The Fight Breakdown

From the opening bell, José Luis Castillo vs. Diego Corrales I was an all-out war. Round 1 sets the tone as both fighters sit in the pocket and throw heavy shots at close range with the intensity you normally find in the championship rounds. Round 2 continued with both fighters trading hard shots inside; Castillo hurt Corrales with an uppercut, and Corrales responded by hurting Castillo with a left hook. The pace was unrelenting, as each round saw brutal exchanges, with Corrales taking early control but Castillo gaining momentum in Round 3. Castillo’s heavy shots visibly affected Corrales, but Corrales kept returning, showing tremendous heart and resilience. By Round 5, Corrales found a second wind and used his jab to create distance, but Castillo continued to land heavy counters. As the fight progressed, it was a battle of endurance, with both fighters trading power shots in a grueling, back-and-forth war.

The Famous 10th Round:

The 10th round of Castillo vs. Corrales is one of the dramatic moments in boxing history. Early in the round, Castillo feints low and lands a hard left hook that sends Corrales to the canvas. Corrales barely managed to get up, and after losing his mouthpiece, he was knocked down again by another powerful shot from Castillo. Corrales intentionally spit out his mouthpiece at that point, earning a one-point deduction. It looked like the end for Corrales, but with seconds to spare, he got up again. Miraculously, Corrales bought himself enough time to recover and hurt Castillo with a right hand before desperately unleashing a flurry of punches that left Castillo unable to defend himself. The referee stops the fight and gives Corrales a stunning victory in what is considered one of the greatest comebacks in boxing history.

Round by Round Breakdown

Round 1:
The fight starts with immediate action, and both fighters go at it right from the get-go. They stay close, trading shots from the pocket, moving in and out of range, throwing punches in what would usually be saved for the championship rounds. 

Round 2:
Once again, both fighters are staying on the inside, exchanging hard shots. Castillo gets hurt by a left hook, and an uppercut rocks Corrales. While Corrales probably landed more, it’s a technical dogfight, with both landing clean, powerful shots to the head and body. It’s more action-packed than most entire fights.

Round 3:
Still no shortage of adrenaline, although Corrales is slowing down as Castillo starts to take control. The fight continues to be close range, and Castillo is landing Castillo heavy shots that visibly affect Corrales. Despite this, Corrales stands his ground and fires shots back at Castillo.

Round 4:
A close round, with both fighters now bleeding. Castillo edges ahead in this war of attrition as both continue to trade vicious blows.

Round 5:
Corrales catches a second wind and comes back strong. Both fighters sometimes begin to separate and fight at a distance, but they still engage in close-range exchanges. Corrales controls the first half with his jab, but Castillo is quick to counter. The commentators worry about Castillo’s cut, wondering if it could stop the fight early.

Round 6:
There’s still no knockdown, but Castillo hurts Corrales near the end of the round, leaving him stumbling back to his corner. Both fighters continue to fight at close range, landing clean shots on each other, but as the round winds down, Castillo catches Corrales with vicious hooks and uppercuts.

Round 7:
Another close round with Castillo outworking Corrales, but then Corrales lands a strong left hand that buckles Castillo’s knees, almost sending him down for the first time in his career. Corrales takes too long to notice, and the round ends when he moves in to finish Castillo.

Round 8:
No knockdowns, but both fighters are tired, getting wobbled and hurt at different moments. They are leaving a part of themselves in the ring. Corrales hurts Castillo, and then Castillo responds by hurting Corrales. Corrales loses his mouthguard during the exchange.

Round 9:
Both fighters are hurting each other. Punches are being thrown with bad intentions every few seconds. Castillo is warned for low blows, and right after, Corrales stuns him. Despite being hurt, Castillo refuses to go down and manages to hurt Corrales by the end of the round. Corrales lands a huge right hand just before the bell.

Round 10:
Castillo feints low and lands a hard hook to Corrales’ head, sending him down. Corrales barely beats the count but loses his mouthpiece. After getting up, he’s dropped again by a similar shot. Corrales spit out his mouthpiece to buy time, costing him a point. Despite being hurt, Corrales miraculously recovers, fights back, and manages to stun Castillo. In a shocking turn of events, Corrales unloads a barrage of punches, leaving Castillo defenseless, and the referee steps in to stop the fight, giving Corrales a dramatic victory.
