Lyuba, a multifaceted talent from St. Petersburg, Russia, has made her mark in Hollywood as a writer, singer, actor, and producer. Known for her compelling documentaries and her latest project, the drama TV series “Love Over Evil,” Lyuba’s journey from Russia to Hollywood is a testament to her resilience and passion for storytelling. In this interview, she shares her experiences, challenges, and the cultural bridges she aims to build through her work in the film industry.

Lyuba: My name is Lyuba, which means Love in Russian. I was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I moved to Hollywood. Understandably, this wasn’t the best time for movie production. Prior to my move to the USA, I produced documentary films called “Save the Children” and “There is Strength in Truth.” I am also a writer, singer, actor, and producer. I am currently writing and producing the drama TV series “Love Over Evil.”

Interviewer: What were your first steps in the film industry, and what inspired you to pursue film production?

Lyuba: I have always enjoyed storytelling, especially personal and uplifting stories. For example, my favorite movie is “Life is Beautiful.” I started with documentaries, and my next challenge was to produce a TV drama series called “Love Over Evil.” My first significant step was moving to Los Angeles from Russia to pursue my dream of becoming a producer. In the process, I discovered that I enjoy acting just as much as I enjoy writing and producing.

Interviewer: Tell us about your move from Russia to Hollywood. What were the main challenges and discoveries in this transition?

Lyuba: Producing a film requires a lot of work before shooting begins. I am not new to challenges, but juggling work and production in Los Angeles is still not easy. It requires a lot of networking to make the right connections with people who share your vision. Although I am not afraid of challenges, it can still be tough. You have to have great intuition and faith. Being a woman producer in a predominantly male-driven industry is another challenge that is hard to overcome. Despite these hurdles, I am determined to persevere and make my mark in the industry.

Interviewer: What are the main differences you have noticed between the Russian and American film industries?

Lyuba: A major difference is that in Russia, the film industry is often subsidized by the government. Many films receive government grants, especially if they focus on a specific agenda or meet particular quotas. In the United States, particularly in Hollywood, it’s less about pure self-expression and more about the commercial success of a film or a television series.

Interviewer: Which project or film do you consider your breakthrough in Hollywood and why?

Lyuba: I am currently pouring all of my energy into developing an original passion project based on a true story that unfolded in Russia. As a screenwriter, I am crafting a narrative that is evolving into a drama series with the uplifting title “Love Over Evil.” We are currently in the pre-production phase, gearing up to shoot the trailer in my hometown of St. Petersburg. Interviewer: Are there particular themes or stories you prefer?

Lyuba: I have a strong preference for drama, as this genre aligns well with my personal tastes and creative vision. However, I am open to venturing into new territories as well.

Interviewer: What makes you unique as a producer?

Lyuba: What makes me unique as a producer is my ability to unite and motivate the people around me. This collaborative spirit is key when working with a diverse range of talents and perspectives.

Interviewer: Do you think your work helps to bridge Russian and American cultures?

Lyuba: I believe modern cinematography often aims to bridge cultures, and co-productions have become quite common. “Love Over Evil” highlights aspects of Russian culture while presenting a universally relevant story. The themes of injustice and government corruption resonate with people across different countries and backgrounds. On a grand scale, the “Love Over Evil” series is about the eternal battle between good and evil.

Interviewer: Are there specific aspects of your work that you would like to highlight for an international audience?

Lyuba: I am actively seeking investors to support my projects. This involves building a strong team and creating a compelling pitch that resonates globally. Additionally, it requires significant efforts to market the series internationally.

Interviewer: What are your plans for the future? Are there genres or stories you haven’t explored yet but would like to?

Lyuba: My plan for the future is to produce the TV series drama “Love Over Evil.” I want to share the story of a man named Gleb.

Interviewer: What is the TV series about?

Lyuba: In the heart of Russia, an honest and charismatic man of faith, dedicated to rescuing abandoned children from addiction, finds himself wrongly accused of a heinous crime against the very children he aims to save. Now, he faces an 18-year sentence in a maximum-security prison, putting his faith, family, and mission to the ultimate test. “Love Over Evil” is a gripping drama that explores the impact of false accusations on a beloved figure, testing the boundaries of faith, family, and community in the face of adversity. The pilot sets the stage for a compelling series that delves into Father Gleb’s fight for justice, the turmoil within the church, and the unwavering support of those who believe in his innocence. In addition to this project, I will be playing a leading role in the Tollywood-Hollywood production of the horror suspense thriller ‘Ninnu Vadalanu,’ which is a straight Telugu movie. Telugu is one of the most widely spoken languages in India and globally, with approximately 81 million speakers. This film should be happening soon and will be shot on the island of Goa in India. It is a horror suspense thriller directed by Sheraz Mehdi and produced by Ashok Khullar under the UVT Hollywood studio and Shreya Productions.

Interviewer: How do you spend your free time in Hollywood? Are there hobbies or interests you have that few people know about?

Lyuba: I am a big fan of sports and travel, and I am always discovering new interests. Recently, I started playing tennis and learning belly dancing, in addition to other activities I enjoy. I also love hot yoga and rollerblading.

Interviewer: Do you believe that balancing work and personal life is important in the entertainment industry?

Lyuba: Balancing work and your passions is crucial. I am fortunate to have the time as I am currently single (smiling). I have plenty of time to dedicate to my work and pursue my passions wholeheartedly.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to young producers aspiring for success in the film industry?

Lyuba: My advice to young producers aspiring for success in the film industry is simple yet powerful: have faith and don’t look back!

Interviewer: Are there any mistakes you made early in your career from which you learned valuable lessons?

Lyuba: Early in my career, I made the mistake of waiting on others to get things done. I’ve learned that it’s crucial not to rely too heavily on others for progress. Additionally, I used to be overly focused on perfectionism, a trait I still struggle with. However, I now realize the importance of taking action rather than waiting for perfection. It’s better to move forward with imperfect progress than to wait indefinitely for flawless results.

Interviewer: How do you see the future of the film industry in the context of globalization and technological changes?

Lyuba: The future of the film industry in the context of globalization and technological changes is both promising and challenging. Technological advancements have already revolutionized how films are made, distributed, and consumed worldwide. Innovations like CGI, virtual reality, and streaming platforms have expanded creative possibilities and global audience reach. I hope that technology won’t replace the unique contributions of human talent and creativity in the arts and music.

Interviewer: Final word?

Lyuba: I am happy to find entertainment professionals to collaborate with. I am still looking for an experienced director (preferably someone who speaks Russian) and investors to finance the first step of shooting a pilot to present to studios in Hollywood. This project is global, and I see its tremendous potential in gaining the interest of not only American but also international audiences.
