Bank of England say the UK will fall into recession

As it raised interest rates by the highest in 33 years, the Bank of England said the UK is facing its most prolonged recession since records began.

It warned that the UK would have a “tough” two-year slump and that by 2025, unemployment would have almost doubled.

Andrew Bailey, the head of the bank, said that things would get hard for UK households but that the government had to act quickly or things would worsen later.

It raised interest rates from 2.25 percent to 3 percent, which was the most significant jump since 1989.

The Bank is trying to stop prices from increasing by raising interest rates. This is because the cost of living is going up at its fastest rate in 40 years.

Food and energy prices have increased partly because of the Ukraine war. This has made life difficult for many people and is starting to slow down the economy.

When a country’s economy shrinks for two consecutive three-month periods or quarters, this is called a recession.

Companies usually make less money, wages decrease, and unemployment rises. This means the government will get less tax money for things like health care and education.

The Bank had previously said that the UK would go into recession at the end of this year. And that it would last for the whole of next year.

But it now thinks that the economy is in a “challenging” downturn that started this summer. And will last through next year and half of 2024, which could be a year with a general election.

The UK’s worst recession since the 1920s

The Bank said this wouldn’t be the UK’s worst recession, but it would be the longest since the records began in the 1920s.

Unemployment rate is at its lowest in 50 years, but will go up to nearly 6.5%.

Since former Prime Minister Liz Truss and former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng released their controversial mini-Budget in September, this is the first news about interest rates.

Their plans for unfunded tax cuts worth £45 billion, which have been rolled back. This sent the pound’s value down and caused market chaos, so the Bank of England had to step in to calm things.

Mr. Bailey told the BBC that the mini-budget had hurt the UK’s reputation abroad.

He said that it was clear that the UK’s position and reputation had been hurt at a recent International Monetary Fund meeting in Washington.

During the same week, Mr. Kwarteng was fired from his job as Chancellor.

With the most recent rate hike, the Bank’s eighth since December, borrowing costs are now at their highest level since 2008, when the UK banking system was close to failing.

The Bank thinks that raising interest rates will make it more expensive to borrow money and make people less likely to spend money, which will relieve price pressure.

But while savers will be happy about the latest rate hike, it will hurt people who have mortgages, credit card debt, or bank loans.

People are worried

UK residents with mortgage loans worry about the economic realities. The Bank thinks that those whose fixed-rate deals are ending could see their annual payments go up to £3,000 if interest rates keep increasing.

It said that the interest rates would go up if inflation stayed high. The financial markets thought that rates would reach their highest point at 5.25 percent. But the Bank thinks they will only go this high.

The Bank of England will decide on the interest rate before the government announces its plans for taxes and spending at the Autumn Statement on November 17.

In response to the Bank’s warnings, the pound’s value fell by 2% against the dollar on Thursday. And the cost of borrowing money from the government went up.

After a series of U-turns, government borrowing costs and the pound’s value have somewhat recovered. However, mortgage markets and business loans still show signs of stress, which adds to the long-term economic hit.

According to the forecast, the unemployment rate will go up, and household incomes will go down.

The economy is going through a rough time, and the UK is doing worse than the US and the Eurozone.

Experts predicted a sharp energy recession, but now anticipate a shallower and longer energy and mortgage shock.

Tinder: Cost of living crisis unable to stop users

As the cost of living increases, people spend less on everything from streaming videos to buying groceries. But many still need to be ready to cut back on dating.

The owner of Tinder says that from July to September, the number of paid subscriptions to the dating app went up by 7% around the world.

Match Group, which owns Hinge and OkCupid, said that total sales went up to $810 million (£704 million) in the last quarter.

But it warned that the slowdown in the world economy was starting to hurt.

In particular, it said that a weaker economy is hurting brands like Plenty of Fish that serve lower-income people. People were starting to buy fewer things inside its apps.

Tinder, saw its sales and user base grow in the three months leading up to September.

The company, which offers a free service, said it had been helped by returning the feature that allows users to swipe right and left from their devices.

Match has about 100 million active users, and Tinder has most of them.

But Tinder users were spending less on one-time features like “Super Likes” and “Boosts,” which make your profile more visible, even though Tinder subscriptions were up.

Match also thinks that Tinder’s sales will stay the same in the last three months of the year.

Revenue and growth

Overall, Match says hundreds of millions of people used its apps. And had 16.5 million paying customers across all its global brands.

That was up from 16.3 million months before July, but most of the growth came from markets other than the US and Europe, where sales were down slightly.

Tinder has had a rough time, and after less than a year as CEO, Renate Nyborg left in August. She was one of several management changes.

Match said it was still looking for a new CEO for the app. It also said that it focused on improving the Tinder experience for women after abusive interactions on the service brought the app into question.

The results from Match come after several tech giants worried about a global economic slowdown.

Last week, both Apple and Amazon said that consumers are cutting back on spending, hurting their sales.

Both said that the rising cost of living was making people less able to buy things.

Also, shares of Meta, which owns Facebook, dropped more than 20% last week after the tech giant reported terrible news.

Shares of Match, which have been doing poorly this year, went up 16% on Tuesday after the company announced its results.

COVID changed how Tinder users view dating

Its CEO has said that Tinder’s “swipe left, swipe right” method of finding matches is no longer enough for singles who are used to lockdown dating.

Jim Lanzone told the BBC that people used to match to meet in person. But that changed when virtual dating became wildly accepted during the lockdowns.

Now, dating app is moving toward “holistic” profiles so that people can learn more about each other online.

Tinder’s data shows that the average number of daily messages sent went up 19%. Compared to before the pandemic, and conversations are 32% longer.

The company says that half of Gen Z users have gone on dates through video chat. And one-third did more virtual activities together.

Users can still swipe right on someone’s profile if they like the way they looks.

Falcon Heavy Rocket relaunch after three years

SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy Rocket, a tall, three-legged vehicle that is the world’s most powerful working rocket, took to the skies again for the first time since 2019.

At 9:41 a.m. ET, the rocket took off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It carried satellites for the US military into space on a secret mission called USSF-44.

In 2018, when the Falcon Heavy made its debut, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk launched his own Tesla Roadster as a test payload. The car is still in space, going around the sun in an elliptical path that swings as far as Mars’ orbital path.

Since that first test flight, SpaceX has only sent the Falcon Heavy into space twice in 2019. One launched a big TV and phone service satellite for Saudi Arabia’s Arabsat, and the other sent a group of test satellites to the US Department of Defense.

But the rocket has not taken off since 2019 since most SpaceX missions don’t need the extra power of the Falcon Heavy. On the other hand, SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9 rocket launched almost 50 missions this year.

The Falcon Heavy rocket splashes back on Earth each time it takes off.

After Tuesday’s mission, the company only tried to get back two first-stage rocket boosters for the Falcon Heavy rocket. The rocket’s power comes from these tall white sticks tied together.

According to a release from the US military’s Space Systems Command, the center booster fell into the ocean. Where it will stay, because it did not have enough fuel left to get back home.

On the other hand, the two side boosters landed in sync on ground pads near the coast of Florida.

SpaceX previous attempts

In the past, SpaceX has tried to land all three of the rocket’s boosters on landing pads on land and at sea. So that they can be fixed up and used again in the future. It does this to keep mission costs down. Unfortunately, the company has yet to get all three back, even though it’s been very close. After a mission in April 2019, the rocket’s two side boosters landed perfectly on ground pads simultaneously, and the center booster landed on a ship. But then, it fell over because of rough seas.

How the Falcon Heavy Rocket works

Even though Falcon Heavy is the most powerful working rocket in the world, two much bigger rockets are ready to take its place.

NASA’s Space Launch System, or SLS, the rocket is in the tall Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center. It is set to try its first launch in November. To send the uncrewed Artemis 1 on a mission around the moon. After that, the Falcon Heavy will take off from a launch pad just a few miles away.

SLS is expected to put out up to 8.8 million pounds of thrust, 15% more thrust than the Saturn V rockets that powered the moon landings in the middle of the 20th century.

And just across the Gulf of Mexico, at SpaceX’s test facilities in South Texas. The company is getting ready for the first attempt to launch its Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket into orbit. Even though federal regulators still need to give their final approval, the test flight could happen before the end of the year.

Everything about this mission

The public does not know the exact mission of the USSF-44. The US military’s Space Systems Command said the launch would put multiple satellites into orbit for the Innovation and Prototyping Delta. Which is focused on quickly developing space technology for tracking objects in space and doing a variety of other things.

When contacted by email, the Space System Command refused to give more information about the mission. Instead, it sent questions to the Office of the Air Force’s Secretary, who refused to comment.

The US military is one of the main drivers of the domestic rocket economy. It gives private launch companies like SpaceX and United Launch Alliance. A partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, lucrative contracts to launch satellites.

Midterms: The economy under Joe Biden

President Joe Biden and his Republican opponents have said he has done a lousy job running the US economy while in office.

Republicans have talked about Joe Biden’s recession because inflation is rising, and the stock market has been going down for most of this year.

Mr. Biden has said that the economy is “as strong as hell” and that there has been good job growth and low unemployment.

The US economy shrank by 1.6% in the first quarter of this year and by 0.6% in the second quarter (up to June).

But the most recent quarterly numbers show that growth is happening. Gross domestic product (GDP), a standard measure of a country’s economic activity, grew at an estimated annual rate of 2.6% from July to September.

During Trump’s presidency, the COVID pandemic greatly affected the economy. In 2020, economic growth dropped sharply because of the lockdowns, but it grew significantly after the restrictions were lifted.

From a longer-term point of view, the economy grew more during Mr. Biden’s first year in office (from January 2021) than it did under Trump and Obama.

Regarding economic growth, OECD predictions for 2023 show that the US will be behind China, Japan, and France, among other major economies.

Biden scores himself high in job growth

Mr. Biden has repeatedly said that steady job growth is a significant accomplishment. In September, he said that nearly 10 million new jobs had been done since taking office.

Data for non-farm jobs in the US, which make up about 80% of the labor force, shows strong growth. Since Biden took office in January 2021, non-farm jobs have grown by about 10 million, more than created during any other presidency since 1939.

But since the country stopped working because of the pandemic, the economy has picked up quickly, which has helped Mr. Biden.

Mr. Biden has also talked about the low rate of unemployment.

In September of this year, unemployment was down to 3.5%, about the same level as in January 2020, right before the pandemic, when President Trump was in office.

Mr. Biden has also talked about how wages are going up in the US.

When price increases are considered, however, real wages have been decreasing.

The average hourly wage has decreased by 3% over the past year (to September 2022).

Gas prices continues to rise

People have said that Mr. Biden is to blame for gas prices rising. When he walked into his office, the average price of a gallon of gas in the US was about $2.39. As of October 31, it was about $3.76.

He has said that inflation is “worldwide” and worse in other countries than in the US.

The US is not the only country dealing with the effects of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Many countries are also dealing with rising inflation and slow growth.

But the US has had higher inflation than some other developed economies.

According to the OECD, the US consumer price index (CPI) for the year until September was 8.2%. This is lower than the UK or some other European countries but higher than Japan, France, and Canada.

Interest rates in the US hit a new 14-year high

As it tries to stop prices from increasing quickly, the US central bank has agreed to another sharp rise in interest rates.

The Federal Reserve said it raised its key interest rate by 0.75 percentage points, making it the highest since early 2008.

The bank hopes that putting up the cost of borrowing will slow down the economy and stop prices from increasing too quickly.

But critics worry that the moves could lead to a bad economic downturn.

The benchmark lending rate is now between 3.75% and 4%, which is the highest range since January 2008.

Simone Ledward Boseman attends first interview

Simone Ledward Boseman, the wife of the late Chadwick Boseman, spoke about her husband with Whoopi Goldberg on Tuesday.

Ledward Boseman sat for an episode of Good Morning America reflecting on her late husband’s legacy.

It’s the first time she sat down for an interview since Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020.

The challenges

Simone Ledward Boseman sat down with Whoopi Goldberg for an exclusive chat ahead of the premiere of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

She spoke candidly about the most difficult two years of her life.

Simone Ledward Boseman shared that her husband’s health began to deteriorate more during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was going through his fourth year with colon cancer.

“It seemed like, ‘Is this a crazy coincidence?’ that we get to actually be inside,” she recalled.

“We get to be here with family, you know, together, and everybody in the world is also experiencing this togetherness in the midst of this awful, scary, unpredictable time.”

According to Goldberg, Simone Ledward and Chadwick Boseman kept a tight circle.

When news of Boseman’s death at 43 broke in August 2020, the world was “shocked and devastated.”

“Some days, I’m doing worse than I’m really willing to acknowledge,” shared Ledward Boseman.

“Other days, I’m doing better than I feel comfortable admitting.”

Chadwick Boseman’s legacy

Chadwick Boseman is best known for playing King T’Challa in Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

While he has passed away, Boseman’s legacy survives with a scholarship named after him at his alma mater, Howard University.

The College of Fine Arts was also renamed after him.

“We have four scholars,” revealed Simone Ledward Boseman.

“One of them graduated this past year, and was very proud to be the first graduating Boseman scholar of the first graduating class of the Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts.”

Along with the honorary scholarship, Ledward Boseman said she would take the mantle and bring it to as many voices as possible.

“I can’t believe that I was so lucky,” she said through her tears.

“I can’t believe that I got to love this person, and I also got them to love me too.”

Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is an explosive addition to the DC universe

Black Adam – DC has had some bad luck with critics for years, but the Black Adam film exposes a gap between critics and fans.

Despite the criticisms, Black Adam has shifted the DC universe’s hierarchy of power.

Black Adam

Black Adam follows the story of Teth-Adam, the champion of the fictional country of Kahndaq.

After successfully helping his people, Adam disappears.

In present-day Kahndaq, the city is under Intergang oppression.

Archaeologist Adrianna Tomaz searches the mountains for The Crown of Sabbac but is ambushed by Intergang.

After reading an incantation, she awakens Teth-Adam, who saves her and slaughters the troops outside the mountain.

The carnage prompts Amanda Waller to send Carter Hall and the Justice Society (of America) to capture and bring him in.

The cast

  • Dwayne Johnson – Teth-Adam/Black Adam
  • Aldis Hodge – Carter Hall/Hawkman

Review

For months, Dwayne Johnson vowed that the hierarchy of power in the DC universe was about to change.

While many ridiculed his promise, Johnson delivered his portrayal of Black Adam.

Although people will be quick to point out how stiff Johnson’s performance was, Johnson’s characterization was spot-on.

In various comics, Black Adam exhibits a strong desire for power.

Thankfully, the film bounced back and went in a direction where he’s more of an anti-hero.

He also has a superiority complex, reflected in his decision to float rather than walk.

Dwayne Johnson conveyed the same sense of superiority and arrogance as an omnipotent man.

The fight scenes were incredible, and the few clips with Cyclone were nothing short of amazing.

Quintessa Swindell’s performance will have fans asking for more in DC’s future projects.

Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman carried restrained aggression compared to his comic book counterpart.

Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher was the comedic relief, especially in his interactions with Hawkman.

In the meantime, Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate will surely dispel any notion of resemblance to the MCU’s Doctor Strange.

The movie didn’t hold back with its action or keep audiences waiting to see Black Adam’s power.

The soundtrack hit all the right notes, especially when Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’ “Paint It Black” started playing.

The humor wasn’t just plentiful; it was the right amount with proper timing.

Ratings

Black Adam gets 39% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 219 reviews.

Meanwhile, more than 2,500 Audience Score verified ratings had given the film a positive review.

The audience score gives it a 90% score.

On IMDB, Black Adam has a rating of 7.1 out of 10.

Metacritic gave it a 41% rating, while Entertainment Weekly gave it a 3.5 / 5 rating.

The verdict

Black Adam is one of the best films released by DC in recent years.

Fans of Black Adam won’t be disappointed to see their favorite villain/anti-hero take flight in this production.

With its action, humor, story, and music, the film has all the ingredients to help the DCEU pick up its pace.

It will be exhilarating (and recommended) for DCEU fans to stay seated once the credits roll.

28 Months Later film still likely to happen

28 Months Later is one of the most anticipated sequels in the horror genre since the first movie, 28 Days Later, turned 20.

Danny Boyle’s 2002 film helped revive interest in the zombie film genre in the 2000s.

It also helped Cillian Murphy break into mainstream stardom.

Two decades later, Boyle and Murphy confirmed they were ready to make 28 Months Later a reality.

The franchise

In a recent NME piece, the director and actor said they were ready for the long-awaited sequel.

28 Months Later is written by Alex Garland, who has completed a screenplay.

In the first film, Cillian Murphy played a bicycle messenger who wakes up from a coma in a deserted London.

He later discovers that the world is overrun by the infected victims of the “Rage Virus.”

Although Murphy’s character survives, he does not appear in the sequel 28 weeks later.

28 Weeks Later was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

The cast includes names like Robert Carlyle, Jeremy Renner, Imogen Poots, Rose Byrne and Idris Elba.

28 Months Later

In the two decades since its release, Danny Boyle, Cillian Murphy, and Alex Garland have been asked about a potential sequel.

Talking with NME, they revealed that they indeed bring it up every so often.

“Every time I do bump into Danny or Alex, I always mention,” Murphy revealed.

“Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it.”

“It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea, and it’s very appealing to me.”

Meanwhile, Danny Boyle confirmed that Garland had written 28 Months Later years ago, suggesting that the core of the film had a “good idea.”

“I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually,” Boyled admitted.

“It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you [NME] just said it and I remembered, ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England.”

Regarding the likelihood of the project, Boyle shared an optimistic view, saying:

“It might come back into focus because one of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is, it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema, because are less and less reasons.”

“It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films,” he added.

“They’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ or a Marvel.”

“But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.”

Kanye West agrees to purchase Parler

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has reached an agreement to purchase Parler, a self-described “uncancellable” social media platform, the firm has revealed.

After posting anti-Semitic remarks last week, the star’s Twitter and Instagram accounts were suspended.

Parler touts itself as a “free speech” alternative to popular platforms and is primarily utilized by US conservatives.

George Farmer, the CEO, wrote on social media that you won’t ever have to worry about getting banned again.

Expression of ourselves

There is not much information regarding the deal’s terms in the release on PR Newswire.

According to the agreement’s provisions, the parties intend to sign a definitive purchase agreement and anticipate closing in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The agreement would also involve “ongoing technical support” from the business, it is said.

After seeing a huge spurt following the 2020 US elections, Parler has struggled to stay relevant in recent months.

According to Sensor Tower, the software was downloaded 90,000 times last month globally, compared to 9 million downloads for Twitter.

BBC News has contacted Parler for more details regarding the fundamental agreement.

Ye, who adopted a new name in 2021, wrote: “In a society where conservative viewpoints are viewed as divisive, we must ensure that we have the freedom to express ourselves.

Kanye West shut down his Instagram after claiming that rapper Diddy was under Jewish control.

He rejoined Twitter after his suspension and said that he would commit “death con three on Jewish people,” which led to his second disbarment.

The 2018-founded Parler, situated in Nashville, Tennessee, claims to have 15 million users.

It is one of several conservative-oriented applications, including Truth Social, a platform endorsed by Donald Trump.

The parent firm, Parlement Technologies, reportedly disclosed in September that it had raised $16 million (£14 million) in further capital, bringing the total to $56 million.

Politicians and broadcasters among the mainstream US conservative population all have accounts.

The app has, however, drawn US far-right organizations who have been kicked off other sites.

Google, Apple, and Amazon’s web-hosting services banned the platform after the US Capitol buildings were stormed on January 6, 2021, for failing to monitor information that advocated or incited violence.

It was also discovered that several rioters had uploaded films and images to Parler showing themselves breaking into the Capitol.

But following a change in leadership and a revision to its moderation policy, the platform was eventually put back into the app stores.

Kanye West was suspended on Instgram and Twitter for anti-Semitism

Following the publication of anti-Semitic remarks, Kanye West’s Twitter and Instagram accounts have been locked.

The weekend after rapper Diddy was accused of being manipulated by Jews, the star’s Instagram account was suspended.

The message fed into a long-standing conspiracy belief that is anti-Semitic.

West received a second disbarment after rejoining Twitter after being suspended and threatening to “go death con 3 on Jewish people.”

Both websites removed West’s posts and said he had broken their hate speech rules.

After receiving backlash for donning a “white lives matter” T-shirt at Paris Fashion Week, the incident occurred.

The catchphrase also appeared in his YZY fashion show, which included Selah Marley, the granddaughter of Bob Marley and daughter of Lauryn Hill, as the model.

The statement has been labeled “hate speech” by the Anti-Defamation League. It is credited to white nationalists who started using it in 2015 in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

West’s stunt received immediate feedback from his peers.

Diddy shared a video on Instagram with the tagline, claiming that he “did not rock.”

Takeoff passes away from nearby shooting

Takeoff, the 28-year-old Grammy-nominated musician, sadly died Tuesday after a shooting at a bowling alley in Houston, Texas.

According to a statement from his record company, Takeoff was hit by a “stray bullet.”

The shooting

The shooting in Texas took place at 2:30 from a balcony outside 810 Billiards and Bowling Alley.

Takeoff was playing dice with his uncle and bandmate Quavo across Bowling Alley.

According to police, 40 to 50 guests attended a private party when someone opened fire.

Upon arrival, officers said they found a large crowd and a man with a gunshot wound to either his head or neck.

The man was pronounced dead, while two other people were injured and taken to hospital.

No one has been arrested so far.

Police response

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner says he doesn’t want to speculate that Takeoff was the target of the shooting.

“Based on what people say about him, he’s well respected, non-violent,” said Finner.

“I would not expect him to be involved, but I do want to wait on the investigation.”

“But we have no reason to believe that he was involved in anything criminal at the time, just as people describe him as very peaceful, loving, a great entertainer.”

Additionally, chief Finner urged witnesses on the scene to come forward.

During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, he said:

“Please step up, get the information to us so we can bring down some closure to this family who’s hurting right now.”

Takeoff

Kirsnick Khari Ball, better known as Takeoff, was one-third of the Atlanta band Migos’ performers.

The group is one of the most successful Atlanta groups, producing songs that made it to the charts.

Migos made catchy tracks like Walk It Talk It, Stir Fry and Versace.

The band broke into the mainstream in 2016 with their single Bad and Boujee, topping the US charts at the time.

The song was also nominated for Best Rap Performance at the Grammy Awards.

While Takeoff didn’t appear in the song because he missed the recording session, the rapper was a key architect for the Migos sound.

As a result, Migos is known for its punchy vocal triplets and scattered, stammering beats.

Tributes

After the news broke, tributes for Takeoff began flooding social media from friends, fans and collaborators mourning the rapper.

Drake, who previously made a remix of Versace, helping the band’s chart movement, wrote on Instagram:

“I got the best memories of all of us seeing the world together and bringing light to every city we touch. That’s what I’ll focus on for now.”

Gucci Mane had a recent collaboration with Takeoff and Quavo for the song Us vs. Them.

He, too, shared a photo of the rapper on Instagram and said the news broke his heart.

Atlanta music legend Outkast wrote:

“Rest in peace, Takeoff. Sending our deepest condolences and prayers to his family, friends, and community of people touched by his craft.”

Many musicians are urging fans who were at the scene not to share videos of Takeoff’s final moments online out of respect for the artist.
